On Sunday, July 25, 17 of the country's 28 districts were placed on alert as approaching thunderstorms threatened the land with massive amount of rainfall. By Monday, Pazardzhik District and the town of Saedinenie both declared emergency situations, as hundreds of houses were flooded when two rivers burst their banks and the inundation of several main roads slowed or completely halted traffic. Earlier in the week, storms also disrupted daily life in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with one person who perished in a travel-related incident and thousands left without electricity as high-speed winds uprooted trees, downing power lines. By Tuesday, Bulgaria's Ministry of Interior issued a statement saying that most areas were under control thanks to rescue teams that had been working throughout the affected regions, assisting people in stranded vehicles and evacuating residents as well as pumping water from flooded homes.
